Routine. Habit. Familiarity. Being similar. Very comfortable when our lives mirror each of these words and phrases. No surprises, just steady as it goes. Great when there is no crisis or drama to drain the energy out of your soul.
For me, when these things entrap us, they serve almost the same purpose as sleep. Routine, habit and familiarity conserve our energy. We don’t need to do a lot when doing the same thing (that we know well) again.
Truly routine, habit, and familiarity blinds us to the possibility of being able to create a new future, a different future for us in our lives. What is missed, in the sameness of our life, is that each one of us has the power to create a new future.
Small changes, trials, together with exposing ourselves to other perspectives, ideas, personalities, worldviews, information, hobbies, experiences, and anything that you can add to the list begins your march towards a different future.
What disappoints us is that the new future never appears in a day.
What’s essential is having the strength to build in your mind what things will be a part of the new future you aspire to live. Not down to the last detail. But rather in broad, rich, descriptive anecdotes of the way things might be.
You see whatever we aspire to never turns out to be exactly what we become. There are things that we don’t know. Opportunities and obstacles we never considered. But change of any magnitude can build within you a larger canvas and provide you with many more colors to paint with than what you have today.
Over time, small changes together with aspiring to a different future so that you have an idea of where you want to go is the secret recipe for becoming more of who you truly are over a lifetime.
It’s more difficult and yet as easy as what you have read. One challenge in our life is do we truly understand what we have heard or read enough to take action?
