Give and take is an old school phrase. You don’t hear it used much today. It’s fascinating to me how something so simple can get lost in our society today.
Give and take is the shortest three word definition for the essence of cooperation. To acknowledge that neither one of us can always be totally right. That we respect each other’s opinion.
What get’s lost in our phones, tweets and posts is that our universe is not the only one that matters. That what we believe to be true could change once we learned more about the other person’s concerns. Without give and take, we make it much harder to get through life.
Think of a person who constantly gets mad at others, thinks everyone else is unreasonable, and that they are always interested in setting things straight by going back and telling someone what’s on their mind.
This is the opposite of give and take. Always picking a fight to prove you are right is not only a waste of time but very ineffective. Don’t make the same mistake for, in the end, it will take you much longer to get to where you would like to go.
And you may lose out on the opportunity to learn something new along the way.
