In conversations, questions are an affirmation of active listening in a conversation. Sometimes to probe deeper and sometimes to provide clarity for something the listener did not understand.
Depth of conversation, only appears when questions take us down different roads towards different learning, understanding, or context. Following the questions and answering them openly and honestly, always leads to better long term outcomes.
Since our experiences and backgrounds are different, we easily interpret things differently when listening to the same words. This is why questions are so helpful. Making sure we understand what the other person meant and not what we thought they did helps us go deeper in all conversations.
Sometimes this approach is not easy, but I have found it to be more effective even during difficult circumstances. We create more in the moment when we do answer the questions of each other directly with honesty.
